George Washington, 1796

Gilbert Stuart

1796

Portrait of George Washington in civilian clothing with his arm outstretched, surrounded by many elements symbolizing the founding of the United States.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

In this beautiful work of art, I see George Washington standing confidently with his arm outstretched in a confident pose. Together, these elements such as the beautiful room behind him tell us the story of Washington’s leadership and the formation of the United States.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

The choice of oil on canvas as the medium gives the artwork a timeless and enduring quality, emphasizing its lasting impact on American history. George Washington being at the center of the painting with a stretched out hand adds to how significant of a figure he was, since he’s the biggest object in the painting. The artist’s use of color and light helps Washington’s figure stand out prominently against a dark background, drawing attention to George Washington.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

It is in a prominent location within the museum to highlight its historical significance. The lighting was carefully set to illuminate the details and colors of the artwork, and an informative plaque with historical context was placed nearby to educate visitors about its importance in American history.
