A Pic-Nic Party

Thomas Cole

1846

A man plays the guitar in a park leaning on a tree during the fall next to a lake. There are many people watching him, while there are other people enjoying picnics in the back. Some people are walking in the background, and there are a few people on boats in the lake.

What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?

A man plays the guitar charming his listeners, people are enjoying their time in a autumn setting in the park.

What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?

Warm toned, realistic painting, alot of darkness very balanced, oil on canvas, leaved are made from a flat splayed brush on the trees, the peoples clothes are slightly more vibrant which focus to then, might is coming from the right the sky over the mountains which are over the lake.

What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?

It’s located in the visions and myths of a nation (life in the kortheast 1800-1890) so irs sorted by region. It’s considered the dialy life of the working class, the leisure time is shown in this painting. The developing cities mentioned is accurate to this, and it contrasts the light outside setting of the painting across the wall.
