The art depicted is a dark mahogany table with silver pots for coffee on top of it. The table is a brownish color with neat linework and straight edges. The ridges on top are very neatly formed, and the pots and coffee utensils are encased in glass, which shows how the contents are important. Underneath the table are supportive legs with curvature that must have required a lot of effort in order to accomplish its construction.
What do you see going on in this work of art? Is there a story depicted?
This piece might not seem to portray a story at first glance. However, the enslaved African Americans who put the table together utilized raw materials to put together such a beautiful piece. It represents their struggle and how they could truly do a lot with the little materials given.
What different visual elements (ie: line, color, light, proportions, scale, composition, media type etc.) do you notice, and how do they help you make sense of the artwork?
The dark mahogany stands out and has a major contrast with the surroundings. It is a vibrant piece with extreme detail. It is very neatly put together as well, showing the proportions were carefully considered when it was made.
What choices do you think the museum made about the object’s display?
The table was placed on a white platform, which contrast the dark mahogany. It stands out among the tiles on the floor as well. We think the table was placed here because it is right by the entrance to the room and would gather the attention of those entering.
