Set in Otello

The set in Otello was mostly made up of glass walls that moved around constantly throughout the opera.  There were stairs within these walls which allowed actors to make themselves look like they were entering or exiting a building. Although it was innovative of the directors to use these multifunctional pieces, the movement of the walls took the attention away from the actors and their singing. Sometimes, it was hard to keep your eyes of the walls since they seemed unstable and shaky that you almost felt like the walls may fall at any second.

The end of the play was the only time the set had changed and the scene took place in Desdemona’s bedroom. There wasn’t much furniture in her room and whatever was included in the set was spaced out from each other. This spacing made the room look isolated from the rest of the play. It seemed to fit the scene since the moment Otello is trying to kill Desdemona can be seen as a private and intimate moment between the couple.
