The screen and Otello

The full stage screen plays an important part in the opera Otello.  It’s used before acts 1, 3, and 4, and has the ability to transition from opaque to sheer.   The screen helps create a mysterious feeling to the opera, almost as if it is the entrance to a new world.

The director projects images of water onto the screen during the opening of the acts. Through the sheer screen, we can see the chorus singing and waiting for ships to come in, while actually seeing digital images of the sea they are looking out on.  This helps bring visual images to the words and music we were hearing during the performance.
