It’s amazing how the small actions of everyday life are incorporated into a larger whole. Galvez takes note of the action of sweeping, and how the very act transformed from a chore to a self-imposed responsibility. I’m focusing on sweeping because last night, I had an epiphany. The broom is a metaphor representing the Mexican community within New York. Their belief in Our Lady of Guadalupe ties them together. Within their faith, they are united (in the Asociacion de Tepayac) as they do what they can to brush off the limitations they live in because of the lack of immigration reform. And a little does go a long way, as can be seen in the permission of using Saint Patrick’s Cathedral to host the feast and the traditions that go along with it.
