“Only in America”

“Only in America” is definitely something every American can relate to and has said at some point. People have different views of America and make comparisons to other countries depending on their previous experiences. People get their views from being abroad, media, and other sources. For me, the phrase has a negative connotation. When I hear or say “Only in America” it’s most likely a negative comment that is about to follow. It’s what distinguishes our country from other places around the world. I think an example of that would be talking about how only in America would the cost of higher education be half a million dollars in many schools.

I have realized while writing this post that it can be used positively in many ways as well. We can use it in reference to the cultural differences that exist in this country that don’t exist nearly as much elsewhere. For example, one can say “Only in America can you have neighbors that are a different ethnicity and race living side by side.” It’s amazing how many ways one can use the phrase “Only in America”.
