Only in America

The most immediate situation that comes to mind when I hear “Only in America” is when I get on the subway and there are people from eight different ethnic backgrounds all sitting on one bench. To get more specific, it is only in America that people will freely express themselves by playing a cello in Penn Station or dying their hair different shades of blue and green. The phrase asserts the idea that America is unique. There is no place else with the freedom or opportunity that we have here. Yes, the phrase may have a negative connotation when used to describe the dollar menu at McDonald’s, the horrible reality shows on TV, or someone treating a dog like a human by dressing him up. However, it all makes America special. People come to America and get so much in return. I chose to believe that this is a positive idea because we take everything that we have here for granted. I am proud to be an American and a part of all the opportunity we as a country offer.
