A Polarizing Phrase

The phrase “Only in America” piques my interest because people use it to state something either positive or negative. When I think about how people may use it positively, I’m reminded of things a person might say when traveling abroad, returning home, or seeing an iconic monument in the U.S. In that sense, the phrase denotes patriotism and an appreciation for what America has to offer. On the other hand, “Only in America” can preface a negative statement as well. Unlike the positive statements however, these negative statements are based more on generalizations and stereotypes of the country than the nostalgic feelings positive “Only in America” statements come from. Like we shared in class previously, people can at times be misinformed of American culture and say, “Only in America,” when really what they’ve just shared hardly encapsulates America at all. To me this phrase is polarizing.
