Only in America

I think this phrase must have once had a meaning beyond the humorous context we use it in now. Perhaps at one time, it really did refer to things that could only happen in America–say, a very poor immigrant becoming a successful, wealthy business owner.

Now, though, whenever I hear the phrase “only in America” uttered, I expect either something funny or something critical to follow it, and I find myself feeling wary of anyone who follows the phrase with some glowing patriotic quip. It’s very difficult for me to imagine that any venture or experience of any real value is limited to America, that in a world as connected as ours, the American experience remains entirely unique.
