Southern Brooklyn

This image shows the water in Southern Brooklyn, namely on Sheepshead Bay. Often throughout the novel we are presented with mentions of various locations in Brooklyn.  In one instance, O’neill talks about a cricket field at Canarsie which borders Belt Parkway, “a strip of cement that separates Southern Brooklyn from salt water.” The body of water in my picture is one instance of the water in Southern Brooklyn. Although this location is not vital to the book, it is close to Belt Parkway which in turn boarders a cricket field. Thus, this relates to one of the most important themes in the book: cricket. For Hans, cricket proves to be a great outlet in a new city, giving him a sort of family in the United States. Overall, I hope this picture brings to light the camaraderie and family that Hans finds through playing cricket with all of the immigrant characters, “We sat mostly silent in the van…What we talked about, when we did talk, was cricket. There was nothing else to discuss. The rest of our lives — jobs, children, wives, worries — peeled away, leaving only this fateful sporting fruit.”
