New York’s Sherpas on life after Everest
In our final two weeks of class, please try to write blog posts that are about New York, or at least tie them to New York in your discussions. This is the kind of story I have in mind.
this is interesting because it reflects the values of the Tibetan community as whole, and not just Sherpas. That is, in Jackson Heights it is easy to spot Tibetan Neighborhoods because they are always adorned in similar fashion and tibetans tend to be very tight knit. In fact, Tibetans try to associated themselves mostly with other Tibetans and continue to practice their religions in the same manner as they have for centuries. For example, a monk designates the first and last names of each Tibetan and conducts marriages only if the couple is pure Tibetan. Thus, the Tibetan community in New York closely follows all of the things that happen in other Tibetan communities. In this video specifically, we can see how the Sherpas are gathered amongst themselves to show respect for the 16 killed.
This piece is a strong example of cultural enclaves in New York City. Even though they are more than 7000 miles away from their homeland, they still gather with their fellow Sherpas and discuss their experiences and grievances on Mount Everest. In general, the fact that the go-to occupation for the Sherpas is to be mountain guides in Mount Everest is amazing. It is such a peculiar and perilous occupation and the sense of attachment to Mount Everest can be seen throughout the video.
