I fear not being able to articulate what I am observing or feeling. Art leaves me unable to speak at times. I am sure to expect from MOMA pieces that are absolutely out of the ordinary, perhaps indescribable.

I worry that I will miss the central elements of the works in the exhibition too. What classifies as good art? What makes them worthy of display at an institution such as MOMA? Does art have to speak life messages?

My fear is that I will not be able to look deeply into the art, or think too simply. Some of the meanings are easy to figure out, some are not. From Zhang Huan’s exhibit, “Altered States”, I expect to see some very experimental, shocking works. The only thing that I am just a tiny bit worry is the nudity. Since the artist is trying to experiment art with his own body, there will be a lot of things that perhaps I have not gotten used to, and feel slightly uncomfortable. However, I hope to discover the joy and something that will change my perspective of the modern art.

i agree with evan, in that my biggest worry is writing papers or talking about things that only really make sense to me, and when something really works or appeals to me, a lot of the time it is special to me and i’d be embarassed to talk to other people about it. kind of like that elvis quote “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture - it’s a really stupid thing to want to do.”

(but i do realise the point/benefits of talking about this stuff and trying to broaden our horizons etc)

I would like to say that I understand contemporary art, but in reality I do not. I am scared that I will never find meanings behind these things.

And if I have to write papers about them then I would be worried. Contemporary can be interpreted in more ways than traditional art. So the paper would probably be harder to write.

In situations like these the words “abstract” and “contemporary” become interchangeable. Will all contemporary art be abstract?

Visual art is more about personal exploration. The past performing art was more about trying to understand the meaning of the director or writer. This is not to say that in visual art has no intended meaning. Part of the purpose of visual art, is to invoke a feeling or passion that would make you think about the art’s meaning.
I am just worried that I would interpret the purpose of visual art wrong, especially contemporary art. Contemporary art is more about the interaction between viewer and art based on concepts. But art can be sometimes so confusing we can find meaning in everything or nothing. It’s confusing. Or maybe this confusion is the whole point of visual art?
