Over the past ten years, many bus companies have appeared in Chinatown. These companies charge very low rates for trips to nearby cities such as Boston, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Richmond. Because of their low prices, the bus companies have gained widespread popularity and have even spurred the creation of higher quality economy bus lines, such as BOLT bus. Low prices often come at the price of poor service, as many of these bus lines are notorious for speeding and driving recklessly. ^[1]

Fung Wah

Fung Wah was the first bus company to appear out of Chinatown, and it is now one of the most reputable.^[3] The company began by providing cheap van rides between Brooklyn and Chinatown, and after a year it extended its reach to Boston's Chinatown. Now the company has a booth in Boston's South Station marking its significant growth as a business.

Fung Wah Bus Transportation has a reputation for speeding, and many people refuse to use the line as a result. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rated the drivers in the worst 2 percent nationwide. Fung Wah buses have been in several accidents, some due to excessive speed. Fung Wah means "magnificent wind" in Cantonese, and these buses will get you places as fast as that sounds, although you might have to close your eyes and pray for a bit. ^[4]

Other Bus Companies

There are many other well-established Chinatown buses, some of them as cheap as $1. Vamoose Bus and Tripper Bus share these shockingly low rates. One way that these companies keep their prices so low is through fierce competition. Apex Bus, for example, has developed a rivalry with nearby New Century.
