My first suggestion is the Guggenheim Museum, and in particular the exhibition on Modernity in Central Europe. This exhibit is similar to the Taro and Robert Capa exhibitions, and since the class liked the Capa exhibit I thought this would be an interesting one. Drawn from several dozen American and international collections, this exhibition is unprecedented in its scope with approximately 150 photographs, books, and illustrated magazines that explore such topics as photomontage and war, gender identity, life and leisure in the modern metropolis, and the spread of surrealism. They give out group packs so it shouldn’t be expensive. The exhibit is open from 10 AM until 5:45 PM on Tuesdays.

My second suggestion is one of the ones on the back of our cultural passport because it is free for us, the Museum of Arts and Design. They have a new exhibit, Pricked: Extreme Embroidery, which involves forty-eight international artists rejuvenating the century old handcraft tradition to contemporary art and design. The works convey powerful and personal content that range from subjective dreams and diaries to controversial politics in today’s world. It would be interesting to see this exhibit because like the Sontag works it is a new medium style, and it would be interesting to see how they show the artists show their ideas. It is free and open at 10 AM until 6 PM on weekdays.
