New York Film Festival
One of the things i saw outside the class was a Film Festival down by the southstreet seaport. The premise of the whole festival was simple, last year they gave a theme for a film project, and then anybody could contribute their amatuer film to be judged and potentially win a grant to make more movies. It was great because it gave some non-professional filmmakers the chance to gain the spotlight and get some recognition. The films were surprisingly well performed. They were based on the theme “slice” although they were all totally different. There were 15 finalists, and a bunch of categories in which each film, actor and director could win. It was a good idea but the whole thing was pretty un-professional, and i think that they just wanted to raise publicity for Tribeca films, because they sponsored the event. It was no so focused on the art, but more on the number of celebrities they could get to show up. Also, as a side note, i almost tripped Jean Grey from X-Men at this event.
