Pamina Devi: A Cambodian Magic Flute

Pamina Devi: A Cambodian Magic Flute was a very interesting performance. I’m glad that I had the opportunity to have a glimpse of a very different culture. Perhaps, if it weren’t for this class, I would never have gone to seen it. One should always try all things once, right? I am also glad that I got to see something that is revolutionary in its own sphere. Ms. Shapiro incorporated something very “Western” and something not so “Western.” It takes a lot of guts to do something like that. After all, the Cambodian dance is a form of prayer and therefore done very slowly. It is a very religious thing. To join that with something secular takes a lot of guts! She was going out on a limb but it was a good idea. I really liked the costumes!! They were well designed–taking into account Cambodian culture as well as entertainment and show business! I also found it very interesting that the dancers were all women and the audience had to distinguish them by their apparel. The women who had male roles wore pants and the women who wore skirts had the role of women. Above all, it was a learning experience.
