The Art of the Body

The BODIES exhibition is probably one of the most astonishing science exhibits existing today. It offers a fascinating hands- on experience of the human body. This exhibit is being featured in many branches located in US locations such as Las Vegas, NYC, Atlanta, and many more all around the world. I visited the one in NYC, located in south street seaport in Manhattan.

The BODIES exhibition consists of many rooms that are separated according to topic. The exhibit is magnificently structured. Every room has a theme. It’s astounding to see how complex and incredible the body actually is. Every body part is displayed along with its explanation. The explanations are very clear and easy to understand. Furthermore, when buying the ticket you can pay an additional 5 dollars for an audio tour. The walls are filled with cool facts. Reading the facts was just as interesting as seeing the body parts. The facts were set up in a concise and fun manner. Moreover, I like how they advocate awareness to many problems such as smoking. They even have a bin to throw the cigarettes away.

The way the bodies are arranged is done in such an artistic fashion, but most are displayed without glass. On one hand, it’s a good thing because it makes the exhibit more surreal and astonishing to see; at the same time it’s bad because I feel that displaying the bodies without glass violates these people in some way. Moreover, these individuals are not volunteers; they are all unclaimed bodies from China. I was a little uneasy about that since these people are exposed for scientific purposes oto  the public, and thus don’t get a proper burial. It’s crucial that you view this exhibit in an educational way. I definitely believe it’s a must-see, but if you are going be prepared for what you are about to witness.

At the end of the exhibit there is a hands on station: It includes a brain, bone, liver, and other body parts.  I personally didn’t go touch the body parts but I found it to be a really nice touch to the experience. All things considered, there is definitely no sign of laziness in the Bodies exhibit. You can see that years of work went into it. Going to this exhibit was worth every penny because there is nothing like it, and the experience is truly unforgettable.

  • LISTEN STUDENTS: every Tuesday students can go in 2 for the price of one ticket.
