New York by Gehry

There are very few architects that create real art through the design of their buildings.

Frank Gehry is definitely one of the few.

Most New Yorkers know him for his design of the spiraling Guggenheim Museum structure, but he recently completed the tallest residential tower in the Americas. The project is entitled New York by Gehry.

As a unique take on the developing genre of the high rise residence, its undulating facade has virtually guaranteed it a place among the great classics of architecture. The Pantheon has nothing on this stuff.

I hear the lobby is the nicest in the city. Someone should tell the OWSers.

  1. In many cases, the architecture of a museum adds a lot to the experience. The Guggenheim is an extreme example, in which the design is an integral part of the museum’s set up. As I posted previously, the Guggenheim actually uses its building design in rather unique ways–in that example, by hanging sculptures from the ceiling so that viewers can view them at eye level as they descend the ramp. This idea holds true in less extreme cases as well. The impressive, rather imposing, designs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or even the Museum of Natural History add to the experience. I was actually disappointed when I visited the Museum of Modern Art, because I was expecting some sort of museum design that would add to the “modern art experience” but was surprised to find the building purely functional.

  2. It is true that looking up in New York City is like look up in a canvas—it is like a huge photograph or painting because it stands still, ready for interpretation. While the sky is beautiful, though, we must not forget the importance of architecture on this canvas. The architecture adds to it greatly. If you visit the site, http://www.newyorkbygehry.com, you can see unbelievable photos of the building. I love how it is specifically described as “undulating waves of stainless steel.” What’s so amazing about this building is that it reflects the changing light of the sun so that the appearance of the building is changed and transformed throughout the day.

The amazing interior is just as astonishing as its exterior as it has over 200 different layouts of studio residences as well as one, two and three bedroom residences. The rooms also include custom furnishing and installations. Life changes when you have the ability to see the world around you as art.
