Mayor David Dinkins

David Norman Dinkins, born July 10, 1927, was  the 106th Mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1933 and was the first and only African American to hold that position.

Though born in Trenton New Jersey, he moved to Washington Heights as a child but returned to Trenton for high school. He then attempted to enlist in the US Marine Corps, but had a hard time looking for a recruiting station that did not have a filled quote for Negro Marines. He served in the Marine Corps from 1945 through 1946. Afterwards, he attended Howard University where he graduated cum laude with a mathematics degree. Thereafter, he received his law degree from Brooking Law School.

Before becoming mayor, Dinkins had served as the Manhattan borough president. While under his administration, crime in NYC had dramatically and rapidly dropped. After his term, he became members of various organizations such as New York City Global Partners, the Children’s Health Fund, and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Alan Greenspan was the 13th Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve.

Jacob K. Javits was a  United States Senator from 1957 to 1981.

Henry Kissinger was the former National Security Advisor and United States Secretary of State.
