Mapmaking

My vision of the map:

Links will be placed on the side of the map, consisting of the names of specific interviewees and themes (i.e. cultural differences or experiences of living abroad) that are prevalent amongst the interviewees. When you click on one of the links, that will light up specific markers on the map. If you hover or click on the markers, a small dialog box will pop up with the anecdote or a description. Certain points that have more details will have a link that leads to a separate page on the website.

(I attempted to make a first draft of the map, as visible below. However, I do not have many markers yet because during the interview, it was difficult for the interviewee, Angelique, to come up with specific places off the top of her head.)

Les Ambassades
Les Ambassades is an African restaurant that Angelique and her husband like to frequent. Service here is slow and non-intrusive, typical of restaurants in France, but not preferable to the common New Yorker's standards (as seen by the reviews on Yelp). The cultural difference in food service is a striking one in Angelique's experience.

CUNY Graduate Center
The CUNY Graduate Center is where Angelique is pursuing her PhD in French. Back in France, she was a journalist and did not entertain the idea of going back to school after college. However, by moving to NYC, she saw her husband in love with his fellowship studies and knew that she needed to a career change because being a journalist was no longer realistic as a French foreigner in NYC. Teaching French was the natural path to take and she fell in love with it right away.

Upper West Side
The Upper West Side is where Angelique calls home and hopes to call home for a very long time into the future. Coincidentally, a large population of French in NYC live here, according to a survey in 2011 by the Consulat Générale de France à New York.
