Welcome to Seminar 1 at John Jay College.
This first of four honors seminars introduces Macaulay students to the arts in New York City. We will attend and discuss performances and exhibitions happening throughout the city, including jazz, dance, visual arts, and opera. Our discussions and the assignments for the class will center on questions about the value of the arts to the lives of New York City residents and the obstacles standing in the way of access to these values (considered broadly). Students should be prepared to engage critically and respectfully in discussions about race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and so on.
