Choose a work on display in any museum or gallery space, or one of the works here (from an exhibit, Ode to the Sea, which will open 10/2 in the President’s Gallery, 6th Floor of Haaren Hall). One exhibit to think about visiting is just downstairs: http://shivagallery.org/portfolio/i-have-no-enemies-and-no-hatred-contemporary-chinese-dissident-art/. Imagine that the work you choose is illustrating a page in your forthcoming memoir, and write that page (500-word minimum).

bell hooks assignment

bell hooks, in her 1995 essay, “Art on My Mind,” argues that “promoting and celebrating creative expression” is “essential to any practice of freedom,” and that as “black folks…struggle against forces of domination and move toward the invention of the decolonized self, we must set our imaginations free.”

Use hooks’ essay as the basis for a 500 word (minimum) reflection on Brianna Thomas’ performance. You could analyze how Thomas’ or Ella Fitzgerald’s art is or is not a “struggle against forces of domination,” or argue that creative expression is or is not a proper response to current events, or choose your own approach.
