Winter In Union Square

I chose the painting “Winter In Union Square” simply because Union Square is one of my favorite places in Manhattan. After taking the picture and going to Union Square I soon realized that what Hassam had painted no longer existed. In the painting the artist seems to be looking across Union Square on a wintery day. There is a street that runs diagonally across the painting neatly dividing the ground that is covered in snow into two right triangles. Try as I might I was completely unable to find a place in union square that had even a similar composition to this painting. The photo I took incorporates a similar curved road to the one seen in Hassam’s painting. I also tried to show the separation between the street of Union Square and the building line. The buildings shown in the painting either no longer exist or are completely hidden by the various other buildings that have risen up in recent years. The Union Square that Hassam painted no longer truly exists.
