9/22 Assignment: The Happy Prince

I forgot how to co-author it, but I did this assignment with Xiang. Sorry for the delay and the continued delay but I’m having problems exporting all the files from my phone to the computer because two other interviews were saved onto the phone memory which cannot be accessed by plugging the phone into the computer. For now we have 2 clips. However, the sound quality due to the traffic is pretty bad. I will try subbing the videos asap. Here is the video so far.

Review

The Happy Prince was sculpted by Ryan Gander. His inspiration was from a childhood story about a sculpture who befriended a swallow. After seeing poverty in the city, he told the swallow to take the jewels from his sculpture in order to help the poor. The swallow died and in the end ‘the Happy Prince’ had given everything that made him an attraction and was taken down. Although this sculpture was based off the novel, Gander also tried to create a “representation of ruin as an idea.” (publicartfund.org) At first glance, his sculpture may look like a lump of garbage which is why this sculpture produces a mixed set of responses. Enjoy!
