Who is an artist?

I tried looking for a definition of an artist online that I was satisfied with. I found this one: “One who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value.”

This definition is simple and straightforward. However, in my opinion, it captures what an artist truly is. I think this definition was also relevant before the 21st century. However, what changed was what the audience wanted and expected to see. In other words, the “aesthetic value” that the definition refers to changed. In modern times, we are more open to new forms of art. What we consider to have value is undoubtedly different. We see pictures, dance forms, and musical compositions that would not be given the time of day even a few years ago. Therefore, I believe that the definition of an artist has not changed much. The real change is that the audience has broadened their idea of what can be considered to have this aesthetic value.
