Cubism

Cubism was a 20th century art movement headed by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. It was during this movement where a style of painting and sculpture that is characterized by emphasizing on formal structure and reducing natural things to their geometric equivalents and transforming it into a multifaceted surface of geometric planes was developed. It is also during this movement and art style where single viewpoint perspective was abandoned.

It originated from elite Europeans’ interests in African, Micronesian and Native American art. Artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were inspired by these cultures’ simplistic styles. Picasso’s art prior to 1907 was known as Protocubism, the precursor to what is known as Cubism today. Cubism was the joint effort of Picasso and George Braques who were then in Montmartre, Paris.
