Solomon Bloomgarden (Yehoash)

Solomon Bloomgarden, or popularly called Yehoash, was born in 1872 in Varzhbolove, Russia. Unlike a lot of the sweatshop poets he came from a Scholar background. His talent for writing was discovered by Peretz, one of the main figures of the Post Classical movement. In 1890 he immigrated to the US when he was 18. He worked as a Hebrew teacher and wrote poetry in Hebrew, which is interesting since although most for the poets had a background in Hebrew they primarily wrote in Yiddish. He died in NY in 1927.

Poem By Solomon Bloomgarden entitled “People”

People

Now fewer mighty ones and less of the many,

But see, the sky brighter and wider,

And still we go linked together, and closer,

Climbing up and up the steps to where

Each of us given his full height

Will push away the ladder

And stand alone, and Share!

(Howe, 73)
