A more recent view of the role of the Mexican woman shows progress has been slow. Women have never made it to the Parliament. On the other hand, after 1970, more women were educated and pursued a career. This is mainly because it became more acceptable. In the 1980s, during the economic crisis: women had to work to make up for low income of husbands. However, even during this time they worked in tertiary sector and were paid less than men. A 1995 national opinion survey found a growing acceptance that men and women should share in family responsibilities.
