Introduction:

It is too simple to say that all Mexican men are aggressive machos that beat their wives, cheat on them, and abandon their children. It is also too simple to say that Mexican men single handedly created this evolved stereotype of the Mexican macho. It is true that certain machismo traits are passed on through family traditions, but the negative connotations do not fit all Mexican families. Disparities in the views of Mexican men and women originate in the history of conquest of the Mexican people by the Spaniards. With time, and with each new generation, the term “macho” has changed meaning as the Mexican peoples attempt to escape the negatives associated with the term.
