- Helps immigrants by providing job placement assistant, free education, information about U.S. citizenship and aid, and transportation costs from the U.S. to Mexico.
- Mexico’s consulates issue passports and identification cards that facilitate banking. They assist Mexicans who are arrested, arrange for the dead to be transported back to Mexico, and foster trade and cultural ties.
- There is much debate over whether or not consulates should be opening up around the US because it is openly recognizing the illegal immigration problem and in some way promoting it. While some argue that they are opening up only to serve the needs of a growing illegal immigrant population, many feel that it is influencing the growth of the undocumented immigrant presence in the U.S..
