In this age of increasing and easy access to information, we are inundated by cultural material online – shorts on YouTube, digital art pieces, streaming music, film and TV and the like.

This cultural overload presents a few issues..

It can make us into passive viewers of art, limiting our choices and not allowing us to go see a live performance, walk through a museum, or participate in an interactive piece of theater or it can turn us off from cultural stimulation altogether. There are myriad sources that curate culture for us, in essence telling us ‘what’s hot and what’s not.’ But this merely makes us consumers of art, as we turn off our critical eye to decide for ourselves and/or don’t engage the art form deeply.

Our course has three main aims

  1. To help you parse the NY Art World (and beyond) and find events, shows, artists, etc. that interest you and are meaningful to you
  2. To develop your own critical eye/ear/mind to engage in the intense and beautiful art scene in NYC
  3. To think about curating as not just something that happens in museums but as something that happens everywhere, in all art forms
