1950’s & The Cold War

The 1950’s: An Era of Opportunity

In the 1950’s, Brooklyn College was home to a student body, mainly from Brooklyn itself, driven and forward thinking. Brooklyn itself was a close-knit “community,” rallying around its baseball team, The Dodgers. The student body at Brooklyn College was known to be communist sympathizers, perhaps not in its entirety, but certainly enough to alarm the then president, Henry Gideonese, to print pamphlets urging parents to uproot communism from the youth. Brooklyn was home to myriad immigrants and their children who were attending college for the first time, seeing college as their ticket to a better life. There was an air of excellence about Brooklyn College as teachers did their utmost to help motivated students succeed.
