1960’s & 1970’s

The 1960’s and 1970’s were an incredibly significant time, not only in terms of immigration in regards to Brooklyn College but in the worldwide trends of immigration. In 1961, the City University of New York was created with Brooklyn College becoming one of its senior colleges. This brought ample attention to Brooklyn College as an educational institution in New York. The timing of this could not have been more opportune, as New York, along with the rest of the United States was about to face a flood of new immigrants. This flood of immigrants came as a result of the Immigration Act of 1965, which ended the quota system that had previously restricted immigration. This trend of a high influx of immigrants continued to affect Brooklyn College throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s despite the budget crisis that eventually caused the downtown Brooklyn branch of Brooklyn College to shut down in 1975.
