Inspirational

Published by Nathaly Martinez under Danny Senna

I have grown to really appreciate memoirs after reading two outstanding memoirs by two amazing writers.I still have not been able to understand how it is that people are able to tell the story of their families in such a creative and interesting way. I can not help but to wonder while I am reading if there is anything that is fictional or embellished to add creativity to the stories. But the more I analyze my suspicion, I realize that this is in fact real life. I yearn to someday have the courage to share the story of my family with the confidence and strength that Danny Senna did. At first I thought, my family s not as interesting as hers, but in reality, everyone has a past that they don’t know about. Taking the time to investigate it the way the Danny did can be very life changing.

After reading her memoir, I realized that she writes in a way that I have necessarily never read before, but I have heard it and experienced it myself. I love that there was no order to her writing because in reality when you’re analyzing your life and trying to come up with a plausible explanation for the outcome of it, there is no set order. You always remember bits and pieces form different times,a nd then realize that they all interconnect somehow.

Having her read Where Did You Sleep Last Night in front of us made her story come to life and become more real. Seeing her read is what made her father and his feeling about the memoir, her mother, siblings, children, and husband to truly exist for me. I wanted to discover where her entire family slept that night.

I loved that she revealed more about her new family because its great that she was able to move on passed the adversaries. She mentions her son and says that she wants to see him have a “smile with no history” and a “smile with no irony.” I felt like listeners, were rooting for her so that she and her family can lead a normal life without being judged. I imagined the feelings she must have experienced when asked questions about her son’s appearance, as if it mattered.

Danny senna possesses characteristics of strength, bravery, and perseverance. She wants to enjoy life the way most of us do like a “car commercial.”

I really valued the fact that she talked about her child and how even though he was just a baby when she was writing the book, people were questioning his race. I think that people are so judgmental even towards a baby, it hurts to know that society is so race-corrupted.

I see that you took a lot of notes, eh? A “smile with no history” and a “smile with no irony,” I loved how she mentioned her new family too, it was just so heartwarming!
