Vermeer’s Masterpiece

Published by blah under Cultural Passport Assigments

I love Vermeer. I loved Vermeer even before I took Art History. There are controversies about rather his paintings can be considered to be truly genius because he did paint with the aid of the camera obscura (dark room).

His technique doesn’t matter to me as much as his expression. The light on his subjects is almost always so soft and warm.

The Milkmaid was no exception. She may seem homely, but she is bathe in a pure, angelic light. In the description, she is suppose to attract male viewers (the Cupid tile in the corner is proof). The painting is not so large, but it has incredible detail (again the Cupid tile). However, no matter how beautiful The Milkmaid is, it still can’t rival The Girl with the Pearl Earring.

Wow this picture is huge. You and Chi are really enthusiastic about Vermeer and this painting, although for very different reasons.

@Zerxis- This was at the Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art

@Nathaly- Yes, I really love these peaceful paintings too, if you like Vermeer, you’ll also really like Cassatt. Mary Cassatt is an impressionist painter who likes to paint mothers with their children

I think that innocent-looking paintings like this are the best to look at. I love old-fashioned art that gives off a tranquil, humble feeling. It reminds me of my own home and how much I want love being at home with my family doing everyday things like cooking, cleaning, laughing, talking etc. Basically anything besides your typical NYC day.

You definitely have analyzed the painting in far greater detail than I would be able to.
It is interesting how the painting is so simple, and yet, so attractive.
Which museum did you see this in?
