SPACE (Society, People, Architecture, Culture, Environment) is the common event for The People of New York, the second of four consecutive seminars at the Macaulay Honors College. In The People of New York, students across Macaulay’s eight campuses work in groups on social science research projects. At the end of the semester, they share these projects on public-facing websites built on our WordPress-based eportfolios platform. Some examples of these projects include Storefront Survivors (Hunter College) and Hispanic/Latinx Nueva York (CSI). More examples can be found at the Seminar 2 Encyclopedia.
SPACE helps prepare students for crafting these projects. Facilitated by the Teaching and Learning Collaboratory (TLC), students will come away from SPACE with the technical skills necessary for presenting their research to a public audience on the eportfolios platform, as well as experience conducting original social science research. This constructs a solid foundation which will be built upon in your class. For a rundown of the workshop’s structure, please see the about page.
Although attendance at SPACE is not compulsory for students Macaulay-wide, their participation is strongly encouraged, and you are invited to require it for the students in your own class.
Learning Goals
- Students will login, create, post, and add media to an eportfolio site.
- Students will learn and practice using one of the following social science research methods: observation, interviewing, or mapping.
- Students will share their research as digital content on a public-facing website.
What is this website?
This website, launched in the spring 2024 semester, compiles the posts made by students during SPACE. All student participants join this site as authors and create their posts, with TLC support, during the event. You can view their posts on this page.
