One of the artworks that resonated with me from the ‘AIDS At Home’ Exhibit was this comic strip, illustrated by Michael Slocum. In many of Slocum’s work, Zander Alexander, a gay African American man, is the protagonist, directly inspired by the artist. I particularly liked this piece because it showed both the rejection and support that gay people faced, and still continue to face, by such a huge portion of society. While some people choose to ostracize others because of their sexual orientation, there also exists people who are encouraging and willing to accept. It struck me that rejection can come from such close places- including, but certainly not limited, to your own parents. This must be extremely heartbreaking, and I cannot even begin to imagine the pain that so many people have to face because of their sexuality; something that in no way makes them any less than anyone else.
