This film is actually a visual poem- narrated throughout by the director. What’s beautiful about this film is the way it shows the interaction between the physical and the mental. A limitation of film as a medium is that the connection between thoughts and outside expressions and events is not direct. The director here chose to interplay her poem with the travails and desperation of a student late in the night. The thoughts of the student are also shown through scenes from other places- positive memories and events that pierce through the trapped shots of the main character. The director’s specific choices of when to put text into the video also serve to emphasize certain points. Overall, I believe this is a beautiful and ambitious project from a young student.
