The Band’s Visit was a spectacular play which incorporated many real life topics such as class, culture, race, ethnicity, region and nation. The play also showed the importance of relationships and how different cultures don’t interfere with the power of relationships. The play is based in Southern Israel, where nothing exciting is going on. When an Egyptian band comes into play, it makes the town “exciting.” The play incorporated Israeli and Egyptian humor and references. For example, even the food in the play was classic Israeli – watermelon and coffee. They also incorporated classic references to Egyptian musicians. The show touched upon class by starting off when the Band first landed in “Bet Hatikva.” Dina and the two other characters were working in the diner. One character was “in between jobs” in the play. In addition, the play touched upon culture in a real way. For example, the whole plot line of why they got lost was because of the language barriers between Arabic and Hebrew. In Arabic there is no “p” sound in their alphabet, so their “p” sounds like a “b.” The way the language barrier was taken care of was by the use of the universal language English. I found that this play did a great way of showing both cultures, ethnicity, and region.
