“It also perpetuates the very distinction between form and content which is, ultimately, an illusion” -Susan Sontag

My interpretation of the quote by Susan Sontag in her article “Against Interpretation” is that the different of the meaning of form and content in the world of art and art criticism is what makes an art piece look like an illusion. In art, the term form refers to the work’s  style, technique and media used and how the elements of design are implemented. Content refers to a work’s essence, what is being depicted. The difference between these two terms makes the art piece an illusion.

I believe this piece of artwork to the resonates with the quote because in the painting the women is looking into another piece of art and tries to copy the women in the paining. The form of the artwork makes you feel like you are going into another world that is displayed in the image, which makes it an illusion. The content of the artwork can be something that relates to you personally and creates an illusion in your head of the event happening to you in real life.

The way an individual looks into an painting can change the feeling and the perspective felt. It allows to be more appreciative and come with an open mind and often time wisp you away into your own illusion.
