What art is, and what it isn’t

“The means of reproduction are used politically and commercially to disguise what their existence makes possible”

John Berger, Ways of Seeing

Art enables us to see the world, and though the inherent value of art is disputed within the mandatory curriculum for students, the very existence of artistic representation broadens one’s perspective drastically. Art may be influenced by those with an agenda, displaying petty advertisements and propaganda under the guise of art, but in truth the worth of representation is far greater when it lives free of bias and outside objective. I chose the three dimensional waterway which runs in New York, not as a piece that is commercially disguised, but as one free from agenda. There is no brand on this water (though Poland Spring and Avena may argue), there is no reality in which a society can survive without such a basic necessity. It is authentic in that it cannot be touched or tainted by the hands of politics. It is the privation of disguise, and therefore, it is art.
