Journal Entry 4: NAWA Exhibit

When I think of the art of women, not too many artists come to mind. In retrospect, the artists that have been focused upon since the dawn of time have been men. Men have been the main focus and have been seen as being the true artists of the land. But, when I went to NAWA on Saturday, September 28th, 2013, my entire perception of art by women was altered. Women artists are more than entitled to get the recognition they deserve for the art that they create. In my opinion, it was some of the most beautiful art that I have seen in a long time. The art done by these women was so exquisitely done, and there was not one set genre of art that the exhibit was trying to showcase. There was abstract art. There was art based on different landscapes. There was art that depicted people, galaxies, food, and even one that depicted multiple abbacy. This art was so profound and I loved every minute that I spent at this wonderful exhibit.

There were a couple of pieces that stood out to me, but, there was one in particular that stood out to me as being one of the best in the entire exhibit. The painting was entitled “Washington Square” and it was done by an artist named Linda Lippa. Ms. Lippa’s workmanship on this painting was absolutely superb. When I first looked at it, I asked Antonio, “Dude, is that a photograph?” He said, “No, man, that’s a painting.” As I stood there, mouth agape, I could not understand how one person could include so much detail into their work to make it literally look like a black and white photograph had been taken. The old man’s shoes looked as if they were real leather. The old woman’s newspaper can be seen in such a way that you could almost read the print on the paper. The facial features of each individual are so precise and are drawn so accurately to a point of where the people are almost sitting in front of you and you are watching them as they sit on the bench. Looking back at it, I am still in shock as to how it could be a painting. But, I digress.

The NAWA Exhibit was definitely something worthwhile for an artist like me. I enjoy learning about new artists in the world and I love to see the new work that has found its way to grace the eyes of the general population. I hope that I am exposed to new artists in near future and I hope that I am exposed to more women artists in the near future. Women artists should be appreciated just as much as men artists are appreciated and if not, they should be appreciated more for the art they create. I hope to see more art exhibits soon for this class and discover new ways of art in the world we live in.
