Blue Branch by Une Oak Lee-Johnson

The colors jump so vividly from the page, shouting their tones at the viewer. Yet, one never thinks it’s garish. The branch and white spaces, both organic, balance the vibrancy of the fabricated. There’s also a beautiful understanding of the color wheel. Bright cobalt is triumphant above the smiling ochre yellow. I’ve no idea what the artist meant with this painting but I’m deeply compelled by it. It’s as if Une wanted to give us all a window into her mind. Her imagination animates the reality before her, lacing beautiful colors amongst nature. The whimsy and reality juxtaposed leave the viewer standing before a true piece of artistry. I believe an artist has the responsibility to take what’s before them and make it their own. Though I’ve gleaned no meaning from said piece, I know it’s definitely ART under that definition.
