The Educational Alliance

Educational Alliance

  • The Educational Alliance was founded in 1889 by German Jews
  • Its intention was to turn Jews who participated in the Settlement House into “quality Americans”
    • It offered day and night classes to immigrants where they learned English, were taught the history of the United States, and learned to become proper citizens
    • Overall the organization hoped to provide an outlet for immigrants –through their Art School, Rooftop Garden, theater, etc.

Demonstrates that musical performances and other events were offered at the Settlement House as cultural outlets for immigrants living on the Lower East Side.
