Mexican and Mexican American Pop Culture: Beauty and Body Image

WHAT IS:

Pop Culture?

“Popular culture… is the totality of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, images and other phenomena that are deemed preferred through an informal consensus within the mainstream of a given society. Popular culture is heavily influenced by the mass media and permeates the everyday life many people.” -Wikipedia

Beauty?

Commonly defined as a quality of something that invokes pleasure and/or satisfaction.

Body Image?

It is: “the picture of our own body that we form in our mind, that is to say, the way in which the body appears to ourselves.” -Paul Schilder, author of the premier research on body image

WHAT DETERMINES BEAUTY?

  • Biological predispositions?
  • Perceptions of what seems unattainable (wealth, social status etc.)?
  • Perceptions of people in power?
  • Biologically humans are driven to want to find partners who are successful. Can a person’s desire for a successful mate lead them to follow society’s definitions of what is beauty?
  • In societies, like Mexico, that have experienced colonization, or have been ruled by other groups, the definition of beauty is based on the prototype of those who are in power.
