Levelfly: An Achievement-based Learning Management System and Social Network
Levelfly (formerly called “”College Quest”) is a combination of a learning management system (LMS), task organizer, and social network. What makes Levelfly unique is that it borrows from the theories behind achievement systems, treating the classroom space as a journey that students can win.
LF re-envisions the LMS experience by simplifying classroom setups and making the online atmosphere more aesthetically pleasing. For the LMS, students design avatars and profiles, participate in forum discussions, and earn experience points and badges for coursework. To-do lists keep track of their homework, and leaderboards rank their performance in fun features such as experience points and likes. Instructors can bestow badges to reward positive academic behaviors, and evaluate assignments by learning outcomes (“Thesis Argument”), which is highlighted for students like “skills”_ in games. Students use this instant feedback to assess their weak areas, then customize their education by doing extra work or seeking mentors, then watch as their “skills” improve in the system. For the social network, students can privately message each other about course work, and form peer groups for studying or common interests. As a web-based application, LF can be used in traditional or fully online courses. Future plans include a Game Center with educational games categorized by learning outcomes.”
