Learning Center Field Tutor @ The Library

The Brooklyn College Library and the Brooklyn College Learning Center began a collaboration last fall to connect services and resources between the two. Space was made in the Library for a master field writing tutor to use to meet with students. The tutor held sessions three days a week (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday) , for a total of 8 hours each week. Students can make appointments (we created an email in Gmail to handle requests) or drop in. The first semester, we had 80 unique visits. During finals (Fall 2013), the college’s residence hall requested a librarian to drop in one night to help students conduct last minute research. The field writing tutor went with the librarian as an extension of the collaboration. This semester, the tutor is back at the Library. We have kept the same schedule, and did so for two reasons: the days/hours of the sessions coincide with busy times on campus, when there is a lot of foot traffic in the Library; the tutor has a dedicated following of students from last semester who find his schedule convenient.

The tutor is available to help with all types of writing, across all disciplines. He maintains records of visits, and records information about the types of help students need. The Library receives copies of this data, which we will use to assess, evaluate, and describe the successes and challenges of the program. The Library advertises the program on flyers at the reference desk, and through a digital banner (2 versions attached) on its homepage (clicking on the banner redirects the user to a static page detailing the services offered). We also distribute our informational flyer through the campus mail system, ensuring all faculty members receive a copy.
