2022 Summer Gathering Schedule

Here’s the full schedule for the JEHN Summer Gathering, June 21-28, 2022, in Washington, DC.

While in DC, we will have free breakfast in the hotel every day.

Tuesday, June 21

All Day–Travel Day. Check in to Hampton Inn, relax and get settled. Dinner on your own.


Wednesday, June 22

9:30-11:00–Morning Meeting. Greetings and introductions. Museums and their purposes, audiences, and challenges.

11:00-4:30–Out and About in DC. Select museums and memorials from the JEHN 50 and visit with your partner. Visit some sites that you expect to match your interests.

4:30-6:00–Welcome Dinner. Meet at hotel at 4:30 PM to walk to Sakina Halal Grill for dinner.

6:30-8:30–The Gifts We Carry: Sounds of Migration and Memory. Poetry and music on the National Mall, hosted by cellist Yo Yo Ma, including performance by JEHN’s own Professor Zohra Saed. More information here.


Thursday, June 23

9:30-11:00–Morning Meeting. Report on what you saw yesterday. Memorials and their purposes, audiences, and challenges.

11:00-5:00–Out and About in DC. Select museums and memorials from the JEHN 50 and visit with your partner. Visit some sites that you would not expect to match your interests.

5:00–Foodways Search. Return to hotel for free time and choose a place for your dinner from our foodways scavenger hunt list.


Friday, June 24

9:30-11:00–Morning Meeting. Start to make some connections and comparisons. How do you see Justice and Equity in what you’ve seen so far?

11:00-5:00–Out and About in DC.  Have a second visit to one or two sites. Look more broadly and deeply and in more directions.

5:00-6:30–Art Reflections. Meet at hotel at 5 PM to have pizza and think about the arts.

7:00-10:00–Theater Night. Walk to Kennedy Center for performance of To Kill a Mockingbird.


Saturday, June 25

9:30-101:00–Morning Meeting. Beginning to plan presentations. How does this all fit with the JEHN program?

11:00-5:00–Folklife Festival. Explore the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall (scroll down on this page to see the Saturday schedule). Return to museums or memorials you still want to see.

5:00–Foodways Search.  Return to hotel for free time and choose a place for dinner from our foodways scavenger hunt list.


Sunday, June 26

9:30-10:30–Morning Meeting. Presentation work continues. What makes it all “honors”? What puts the “H” in JEHN?

11:00-1:00–African American Museum Visit. All of us together will visit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American Culture and History.

2:00-4:00–National Museum of the American Latino Visit. All of us together will visit the new Smithsonian Molina Family Latino Gallery, the first iteration of a new Smithsonian Museum.

5:00–Foodways SearchReturn to hotel for free time and choose a place for dinner from our foodways scavenger hunt list.


Monday, June 27

9:30-11:00–Morning Meeting. Wrapping up. Interviews and evaluations. Free exploration. suggestions for continuing the work and next year’s cohort.

11:00-12:30–Presentation Prep. Finalizing preparations for the evening’s event.

12:30-3:00–Foodways Search. Last chance to choose lunch food from our foodways scavenger hunt list, or to visit sites you still want to see.

5:00-8:00–Reception/DinnerPresenting our work to each other and special guests. Awarding of certificates.


Tuesday, June 28

All Day–Travel Day.  Check out of the Hampton Inn and have a safe trip home!
