NASA aircraft and field preparation

The first day in Fairbanks was devoted to making sure that our gear list was complete, especially with the items that we could not or did not want to carry from New York. We visited a number of hardware and supplies stores, as well as the University of Alaska Fairbanks to pick up the electrical resistivity meter we will be using in the field to conduct near surface geophysical measurements.

The highlight of the day was visiting the NASA aircraft that will be used to collect measurements over the same areas that we are planning to do fieldwork.

This aircraft was previously used in the military. It has been instrumented with sensors that monitor various atmospheric parameters, including methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide.
